North Island's History

Established in 1940, North Island Credit Union has been serving the San Diego community for over 75 years.

North Island was originally founded as the “Naval Air Station San Diego Federal Credit Union,” providing banking resources to military and civil service personnel. Today, operating under a community charter, we have the distinct honor to offer our products and services to all San Diegans.

Over the past 75 years, North Island has received many honors, including the prestigious Governor’s Award for consistently demonstrating superior performance results and organizational excellence in accordance with the Malcolm Baldrige criteria.  North Island Credit Union was named among the top 50 Best Small & Medium Companies to Work for in America from Great Places to Work Institute in 2005. Additionally, North Island’s environmentally-friendly headquarters was awarded LEED Silver certification, declaring the building as environmentally responsible, profitable and a healthy place to work.  

Through the years, the range of financial solutions we offer has grown dramatically, giving North Island Credit Union the opportunity to provide a full suite of products and services to choose from, including business banking, and leading-edge online and mobile banking. However, over the past 75 years, a few important things have remained unchanged:

  • We are still member-owned and community-focused
  • We are still a not-for-profit, returning earnings to our members in the form of lower rates and fees
  • We are still dedicated to making banking easier for hardworking San Diegans
